Implant and revision surgery · breast measurement and device planning · the lifetime-of-the-device conversation
Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.
Dr. Mao plans implant surgery from measurement and from the decades that follow, not from a requested size. In an assessment that means establishing breast base width, tissue pinch thickness, nipple position relative to the fold and chest-wall symmetry first, and then asking the question most patients have not been asked: what they want to happen when this device reaches the end of its life. He raises replacement, surveillance and the removal plan at the first appointment rather than the last, because a patient who has thought about the exit before the first operation makes a different and usually better decision about the first operation. He also says so when a device is the wrong plan — where the problem is position rather than volume, or where weight is unstable, the honest answer is a different operation or no operation yet.
Clinical focus
You are choosing a decade, not an operation
An implant is the only part of this decision you keep. It has a lifespan, a surveillance schedule and a replacement conversation attached to it, and all three are settled at the same time as the size. Patients who understand that before the first operation are the ones who are not surprised later.
